An investigation by The Lever reveals how nonprofit hospital giants are dodging taxes, hoarding land and influencing elections — while giving back less to communities than they take in subsidies.
I understand that there's a new TV series on HBO Max called The Pitt. It's a dramatized fictional (but based on real life)"reality" ER show and it's been getting a fair amount of positive response. I haven't seen it but it is set in a U of Pittsburg Hospital ER. Is this the same corporation that Wendell is writing about in his piece? If so, the show , which is supposedly unafraid to take on medical cost and access issue as they effect the ER drama, has been re-uped for a second season. Seems like its success could be a way for activists to focus some on the Corporate Overlord.
Thank you for shining a light on this egregious abuse of tax-exempt status. Certainly it's past time to tighten up the rules/regulations/laws to address this. Maybe such organizations should be tax exempt only to the degree that it's providing community services...???
Health Care Institutions do not put patient care over profits..sure… Please understand both parties benefit, and the problem is well identified by Potter and others. Their push toward certain solutions give their motives away…Huge Medical Institutions contribute to both parties but more to Democrats…by a landslide. The Dem’s take-home would make a grifter blush. Is the answer to give all the politicians the power and cover to put the money in their own pockets? Hmmm…Wendell? Transparency would be the best disinfectant, but who is fighting for that? Not Wendell. The why is harder. Who is Wendell Potter working for? Reminds me of a master illusionist.
Wendell Potter has been fighting for transparency and Single Payer forever. Not certain how anybody could possibly be defending the Republican party, in any way, for any reason but apparently you are part of the population. Wendell Potter works for us. He walked away from a high paying job as an executive because he was ashamed. FYI - Americans pay the most and get the worst 'healthcare' of all industrialized (rich) countries.
I saw our local hospital's balance sheet. They have $1 billion in investments. I assume stocks and bonds. I don't know what their real estate investments are. It seems to me they have no tax consequences for any transaction they choose to make in their investments.

Thank you. Shared. More about profit driven sick "care" in this country. Well Worth your time.
Memorial Sloan Kettering, NY-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, Northwell Health (they even have a production studio now), and the list goes on...
what is a production and what is it producing?

All part of mostly Republicans insistence that for profit private insurers will police themselves

Also Check assets at st Jude’s children’s hospital
According to their 2023 990 Form, $9 Billion in total assets, $3.25 Billion in investments.
I’ve seen advertisements of mega raffles for hospitals. I wonder how taxes come into to play for profit made off of mega raffles in healthcare.
