In “American Hospitals: Healing a Broken System,” a documentary I helped produce, journalist Elisabeth Rosenthal succinctly summed up a big reason why so many of us are mired in medical debt: While the pharmaceutical industry and other parts of the U.S.
If CEOs aren't personally held accountable these private equity owned 'non profit' hospitals will only get worse. Congressional threats are meaningless. Putting a CEO in prison is EVERYTHING.
Also, with multiple violations why isn't their non profit status revoked? Corporations are NOT afraid of the federal government. They use it to increase their profits by buying the politicians and judges (Thomas).
We need new laws making it a federal crime to misuse your non profit status. They are also stealing our taxes through tax breaks.
There are awful non-profit hospitals, that’s well-documented, but hospital expenses have skyrocketed since Covid while contracted reimbursement rates haven’t changed. “Follow the money” leads you to the doors of the insurers, who have banked billions since Covid. But reporters aren’t knocking on those doors as often as they should. I believe the non-profit hospitals are targeted by investigative reporters simply because it’s easy to get their publicly-reported data. What’s going to happen from this legislative push is that all the honest non-profits will be punished for the ills of the wicked few and the bill’s sponsors will be slapping high fives.
That's $4.3 TRILLION.
Good eye!
Great article. Thanks.

That's easy, as long as politicians are allowed to invest in the very companies they are making (or not) laws for, this will continue.
