As a ÐDS that has spent many years in the "insurance industry ", a few comments

1. Dental insurance does not truly exist, especially compared to medical , it is a limited definition.

You can't offer a fixed benefit of 1K and say it covers dental merely because you wish it.

Life doesn't work like that.

2. The industry's defined benefits never match up to the fees

3.The Doctors that are in network often are required to accept fees that are below costs- how can that work? FWA

4. The MLR has so many holes that you can drive a 20 ton truck thru it

More available if you wish thank for highlighting this

It's actually worse. They are literally getting rich of our cavities, most of which don't have to be filled, as Quizzify users (and apparently only Quizzify users) know. https://www.quizzify.com/post/great-news-i-got-a-cavity

Most health insurance is not insurance. And Delta of California had a major breach of their member data, and did nothing to protect it from being used for fraudulent purposes.

Seth, I am surprised at the lack of knowledge being expressed in your article. The maximum annual benefit is dictated by the employer under group plans or by the purchaser with individual plans. I have business clients who have upwards of $3,000 annual maximum benefit per person. Insurers offer higher benefit limits but it's up to the purchaser to decide how much they want to pay. Higher limits, higher premiums.

Dental insurance preventative benefits are designed to promote and sustain dental health. Many medical conditions can be detected through regular oral exams. Preventative procedures are covered at 100% under the majority of dental plans, and this includes exams, cleaning, and many times bitewing x-rays. Although most plans provide 2 exams and cleanings per year, many others will cover an additional 1 or 2 cleanings per year for those with periodontal decease.

Dentists are not forced to join provider networks, and many don't. Especially in rural areas. They agree to the fee schedule before signing the contract. Like all insurance, dental insurance is not perfect. However, many are happy with their coverage. 100% preventative coverage encourages those to see their dentist at least once per year which is the intended goal for good oral and physical health.

Not sure what happened on your preventative claim but in my many years working with dental insurance NOT ONCE has any a exam and cleaning been denied. Not surprised that an exam and cleaning costs $250 in CA. Maybe you need to get out of that state.

As anyone who understands government regulation knows that when the government regulates something, the cost goes up! MLR was a perversion of the ACA and has had no affect on the delivery better health care. it's just a transfer of money.

Lastly, if executive income is a concern, why was Anthony Fauci the highest paid employee of the federal government while delivering very little value. He has been funding "gain or function" research with tax payer money, which advances nothing in the field of health care, for years!

Yes this enormous amount of profit in health insurance industry could not exist without corporate welfare.

This taxpayer dollars can go to providers, communities, education, training and prevention with expanded & improved Medicare for all.

But it never happens that way because politicians like controlling the purse strings, and diverting funds for their pet projects/causes. Governments are wholly inefficient.

I have never used dental insurance. I have been blessed with good teeth (although not straight). So I go to the dentist once a year and floss/brush regularly.
