James Van Der Beek’s final months revealed how medical crowdfunding has exploded as Americans struggle with rising out-of-pocket costs and insurance denials.
As private healthcare industry has transferred approximately $79 trillion from the working class to the wealthy one percent over the past 50 or so years
Our whole Casino Healthcare is rife with BIG exclusions and gotchas. SAG-AFTRA is one of those. Out of roughly 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members, only ~20–25% qualify for SAG health insurance in a given year - and qualifying income is annual - which isn't how union actors make their money. And that's just to qualify for insurance - they still have to pay for premiums/deductibles/co-pays etc...
Too many operational gears in US consumer health care are broken!
Nonprofit hospitals build billion dollar buildings. Premiums paid by employers are biz expenses(pre-tax) yet if individuals pay it is with after tax dollars. HC execs are overpaid in millions to oversee these insurance companies; physicians’ reimbursements for Medicare since 2001 are -33% inflation adjusted! Everybody on Medicaid would also break apart! Why isn’t Congress helping this morass?
What gets lost in conversations about medical crowdfunding is everything that happens before someone finally creates the GoFundMe.
The doctors you found but couldn't afford. The testing you had to postpone. The decisions to do one piece now and wait on another because there simply wasn't enough money to do both.
I'm living this from the other side now, and I've realized how misleading the word "access" can be. Care can exist. You can have insurance. You can even find the doctor willing to help you. None of that means you can actually reach the care.
By the time a family creates a GoFundMe, it may not be the beginning of their financial crisis at all. It may be what happens after they've spent years quietly trying to keep money from determining how much of a chance someone they love gets.
Mr. Potter. Pleases help your readers understand the impact of redefining our family doctor to a Primary Care Physician (PCP). Because it allows big money in hospitals and insurance to pick WHO they will ALLOW to be treated. Our family doctor had a legal DUTY to get us all the care we need. Our PCP does not. And neither does a hospital emergency room. Which allows the big money in hospitals and insurance to effectively only provide access to the more profitable healthcare patients. If I am wrong Mr. Potter, please tell me where. Because, it appears the big money in healthcare has decided to address the affordability of healthcare by limiting who can access it. Fortunately, there is a big hole in this boat, if a patient knows where to look. So, why not help educate folks on how to circumvent the problem Mr. Potter?
I often wonder why the government allows our healthcare system to function at this level. This is a good article, but it seems that until a family member is ill and experiences first hand how bad our healthcare system really is, they don't get it.
Demand citizens buy back stock in America with ending the enormous amounts of corporate welfare grifted to private for profit commercial health insurance industry.
Our whole Casino Healthcare is rife with big gotchas. SAG-AFTRA is one of those. It a has minimum income threshold to qualify for health insurance - and it's an annual requirement. Out of 160K members, only ~20-40K qualify each year - and they still have to pay premiums/deductibles/co-pays.

We are all one illness away of being in their shoes

Care is the solution rather than competition
(Break a leg)
The healthcare industry in the US has such little built-in motivation to keep cost competitive.

Spend money on healthcare for our citizens, not wars. We send money to countries that have universal healthcare.
