This week, I presented the Sunlight Report on UnitedHealth Group's findings to the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee.
Complex systems hide waste, fraud, and abuse. The more complex, the more fraud. There is nothing more complex than the US health system, with a gorilla portion of GDP and decades of perverse government incentives.
How do we fix it? Break up the monopolies, force transparency, treat hospitals as utilities (which will break their monopolies), and simplify the system. Who will suffer? Highly paid healthcare executives across-the-board (in the big institutions, health insurance companies, private equity, and ACO’s. Who will win? Patients and tax payers.
Politicians on both sides of the aisle have allowed this to happen. Case in point, NYS introduce the NY Health Act (single payer) in 1992. Dems have controlled all three executive branches and our electeds will tell us to our faces that they of course support healthcare for all. But yet their refuse to bring it to a floor vote.
Add the president, congress, all gov’t employees and their families to traditional Medicare (because adding a large, younger, healthier group will save the program for generations to come);
Sit back and watch while the president and congress make the plan that protects themselves and their families the best plan on Earth;
Allow everyone else to join that plan without discrimination.
Jerry there’s nothing surprising about the fact that sick people are the ones that drive the costs up for all of us. It’s just that all of us will eventually be the sick people ….
Holistically? The key element is a profit driven health care system, rather than a socially funded healthcare system centered on patients. A single payer system would cost less and cover more, as we know from other countries.
Two reasons (among others) they are losing market share: Whistleblowers such as Wendell Potter have been tracking evidence for years, and yes, sometimes corporations overreach. But UnitedHealth also has a global empire.
Continue the fight Wendell. You know the fight is just and represents the interests of millions of powerless victims.
👏👏👏 thank you for sharing the sunlight Wendell!
Bravo, Wendell and team!

Yes! This is all shocking but so important that you were able to share your findings in a public hearing!

Wendell, thanks for your scholarship and public witness.
Thank you!!
Awesome testimony Wendell. Thank you for proving where the fraud is with USA healthcare.
Three step solution:
Add the president, congress, all gov’t employees and their families to traditional Medicare (because adding a large, younger, healthier group will save the program for generations to come);
Sit back and watch while the president and congress make the plan that protects themselves and their families the best plan on Earth;

I'm waiting for it to buy back all of its divestures when the heat is over. Let us never turn down the heat.

But Jerry you never flesh out your own arguments for how we should approach the problem- just tell us we’re looking at the problem wrong.
Go ahead: give us a well elucidated explanation of your solution to the problems with healthcare in america.
And try to do that without snark
