"Confessions of a Former Carrier Executive": my keynote address at the 2023 YOU Powered Symposium
Last week I had the privilege of being a keynote speaker at the 2023 YOU Powered Symposium in Miami. I’d been asked to pull the curtains back more than I’ve ever done before to explain how big health insurance companies really work, what their priorities are, and how throughout my 20-year career in the industry, I was always focused on one thing: making shareholders richer.
I took the audience through a typical week to explain what I did for a living and how I went about influencing investors and Wall Street financial analysts, politicians, employers, the media, and the general public. We spared no expense. I traveled on private jets and stayed at the most expensive hotels. Policyholders and taxpayers picked up the tab. Hi Wendell, thank you for this presentation. I was a staff member in the CIOs office within an international IT company in the 2000s when they were giving the employees “more control “ and they could become “true adults” while the execs dismantled their retirement systems and moved that cash into a revenue stream which gave the execs huge stock options that year. So your presentation hit home. I have some ideas on changing the fundamental mission of corporations and LLCs to be more than short term shareholder focused.
