Terrific — and horrific — article, Wendell. This is such a perfect example of how our health insurance system is fatally flawed, by allowing conflicted insurers to make the decision on whether to cover critically necessary medical services for patients. Our laws fail to provide a proper remedy, by giving far too much deference to the insurers, and, in most cases, precluding lawsuits that seek damages for bad faith insurance denials. Giving a private insurer like IBX the power to substitute its own judgment for the FDA puts at risk thousands of people suffering from rare diseases. Change is needed.

We need to take the profit out of all medical issues, including hospitals, physicians, drugs, etc.
